Recommended: “The Art of Fielding”

Set in the fictional Westish College, “The Art of Fielding” covers a season of the school’s D-III baseball team, but really it’s a story about a half-dozen interconnected people struggling through life and simultaneously depending on and disappointing each other.

This is the best way I can put it: “The Art of Fielding” incorporates the page-turning storytelling of Nick Hornby, the enormous character depth of John Irving and the it’s-about-sports-but-not-really vibe of “Friday Night Lights.” If any of those are remotely up your alley I heartily recommend it.
