Yesterday’s WWC game between the USA and Brazil was an all-timer, no doubt. Hope Solo and Abby Wambach among others became instantly famous and will hopefully be household names for a good long time. They beat an imposing opponent who was more experienced and playing dirty, all while being a player down on the biggest stage of their lives. A great, great moment for American sports and the team deserves all the credit in the world.
But I don’t think we’re making fun of the Brazilian keeper enough.
Go back and watch that tying goal again. The pass came from about a hundred feet away and was in the air for almost three seconds as it made its way to the goal. You’re ahead by one with almost no time remaining. There is no need to be aggressive in any manner; your team is up a player and there is only one opponent even near the pass. KNOCK IT DOWN.
I don’t care if the pass is curving like crazy. That is not a hard play for anyone, much less one of the top keepers in the world. It was a looping pass headed almost directly at her, and she was so amped up that she ran out at least ten feet from her goal in the hopes to bat the pass away, but completely whiffed. It’s not like Wambach simply rose above her. She just choked, and missed the ball, and I think we need to laugh about that a little more.
