Another good read

29 Nov

Goddammit. Gabe reviewed American Beauty for his “Worst Movie of All Time” series and thoroughly ripped it to shreds. I remember loving the movie when I first saw it at 18 — honestly could not stop raving about it for weeks — but am too afraid to watch again for fear of hating its (now obvious) heavy-handed stab at satire. Oh well. We had some good times, AB.

Last year I caught part of this movie on one of my many cable stations and was amazed at how well it held up. I enjoy a good ripping to shreds as much as anyone, but I don’t think it’s merited here. Lester is pathetic. He says “I wouldn’t remember me either” when he meets the King of Real Estate. He is not supposed to be a hero, he’s just a protagonist. Heavy handed at times, the movie is also engaging (“Platoon,” anyone?). Solid performances all around, too. I had somewhere to go–probably someplace important and intriguing–so I couldn’t watch all of “American Beauty” on TV, but, having seen it in a theater more than a decade ago, I wanted to. Also, how old is this Gabe person? Does he not know any unhappily married adults? I thought that comment about “Why don’t they just get divorced” was kind of stupid. But I think “The Bachelor” is stupid, so what do I know.
