miTunes: June 2009

1 Jul

headphones.jpgThe premise: one CD’s worth of the best songs I’ve heard throughout the month.

The sources: The Current, Pandora, XM and various sites on the web.

The criteria: (1) the songs have to be obscure, underground and/or mostly forgotten, and (2) they must be pop friendly.

The gist: I wade through music’s vast soundscape (listening nearly all day, every day) to discover the hidden pop gems. This is a monthly series devoted to bringing you songs that are universally appealing yet mostly unknown.

1. “Getting Ready For Love” — The Alrights (this band is from Duluth, MN, surprisingly. I am pretty sure I love this song, and I can’t tell if I should be ashamed of that or not. I also fear I may hate it soon. Anyway. Impossibly catchy and guaranteed to stick in your head for four hours minimum per listen.)

2. “Brand New Start” — Little Joy

3. “Mind Idea” — Jeremy Enigk

4. “All This Time” — Heartless Bastards

5. “Ways + Means” — Mike Doughty

6. “My Mind is Ramblin’” — The Black Keys

7. “Girls and Boys in Love” — The Rumble Strips

8. “Valerie” — Mark Ronson feat. Amy Winehouse

9. “Last Night in Town” — Lucero

10. “Release The Stars” — Rufus Wainwright

11. “The Believers” — Brother Ali feat. Slug

12. “While You Wait for the Others” — Grizzly Bear

13. Valerie Loves Me – Material Issue (yes, another song with Valerie in the title, and yes, this song is about 25 years old. Just wanted to remind you of its awesome, underrated existence. You are welcome)

14. “You and I” — Wilco

15. “My Girls” — Animal Collective

16. “Use Somebody” — Kings Of Leon

RE: Valerie Loves Me. Excellent choice. It’s such a good song that the Shins re-made it and called it “So Says I.”
