McCain supporters aren't categorically evil, take two

23 Oct

Hey guys, remember when I wrote that post lauding Senator McCain for standing up to his own supporters — at least that one time — and you guys jumped all over me for being such an idiot? Couple things: (1) the more I read about it, you may have been right. He’s leading a mostly hateful campaign and his claims otherwise (how many times have we heard him use the term “repudiate”?) just don’t add up. (2) Yeah but even so hey look, I found an honest-to-god clip of passionate Republicans who are choosing to rise above the hatred and actually call out their fellow party members! These people really do exist! At least a few of them!

Looks like I got filtered out without swearing. Huh. Anyway, nickel version: the Republican base is out of its collective mind. Tinklenberg and Bachmann are virtually tied according to SurveyUSA. Woot.

Wouldn’t it be better if we didn’t have to “confront intolerance” at these rallies? I mean, the Republican ticket has created its own monster and now wants to be congratulated for telling the monster to shut up. All the while RNC offices around the country are creating the most disgustingly racist mailers (ex: the “Food Stamp” with a cartoon Obama’s face on it surrounded by watermelon, fried chicken, and ribs, or maybe the Sacramento branch’s “Waterboard Obama” mailer).

McCain and Palin opened this box, I’m not going to congratulate them for trying to quell the contents that came out.

I’m also tired of hearing the Republican ticket and their surrogates change the subject. “Yeah, there are some crazies at our rallies, but have you heard what they’re saying at Obama’s rallies?!” Yes, some Obama supporters are wearing shirts that say “Palin’s a c**t”. Not classy, but also not quite like accusing someone of being a terrorist or calling for them to be killed.

Sorry, this whole campaign has just encouraged our country to move backwards, by encouraging every backward thinker that their opinions on race, religion, and politics matter and are important.

    Damn it.
