NY Mag on Chris Farley

20 May

chrisfarley.jpgNew York Magazine, one of the top publications out there, delivers again with their recent feature on the new Chris Farley biography. It’s a fantastic recap of his life and the reasons for his eventual demise.

The most interesting part, however, was the discussion about Farley’s hilarious (or not?) sketch as the super-fat Chippendale’s dancer. One of his most memorable moments, I guess I always figured it was a unanimous favorite amongst his friends. Not so.

Bob Odenkirk’s take:

“Fucking lame, weak bullshit. I can’t believe anyone liked it enough to put it on the show. Fuck that sketch. He never should have done it.”

And Chris Rock’s:

“There’s no turn there. There’s no comic twist to it. It’s just fucking mean. A more mentally together Chris Farley wouldn’t have done it, but Chris wanted so much to be liked … As funny as that sketch was, and as many accolades as he got for it, it’s one of the things that killed him. It really is. Something happened right then.”

I never thought about it before, but you know what — those guys were dead-on. Now I feel kinda bad for laughing my ass off during the first, oh, twenty or so times I saw that sketch. RIP buddy, even though your obsession with pleasing people eventually killed you, you left us with some highlarious memories.

Actually, I laughed more at the Roadhouse star’s hair.
